"Margin Of Error" (marginoferror)

In a perfect world, people would only buy used cars with cash in hands, but unfortunately people like to make poor decisions and keep leasing brand new cars in an vain attempt to establish their superiority over the neighbors.
The BMW 3er is good example of that non-sense. For the price of a loaded Mazda6, you get a detuned 4-pot, leatherette seats and single, sad, exhaust pipe.
Spending $35,000 on that is just as stupid as picking up smoking.
But what new cars were or are sold at a good price, what cars are/were bargains, even when new ?

I still think the Civic Si is priced perfectly at or around 24k

Yes, a good value, and a proper high revving NA engine.

Honda Fit.
In fact they are so good new, they make the inflated used prices look like bad values.
The utility is there with the hatch and the trick seats, you have a flat-ish roof for loading if you want to accessorize for more utility. You get great gas mileage and a reliable product that won’t continue to bleed you of your salary.
It is this commenter’s opinion that anyone with less than 3 kids buying anything other than a Honda Fit is compromising for the sake of performance (Fiesta ST) or image (CR-V.)
(Those two being the only two that can be justified over the Fit if you can admit the want you a satiating in the process.)
If you have three kids, maybe the AVP Caravan. A $19k minivan with a 283-hp V6, sure it’s a Dodge, but it’s also $12k back of many competitors after rebates.

That’s your ideal world, not necessarily somebody else’s. Some people like to turn over their cars every couple of years so leasing makes some sense. I keep cars for a long time so it’s not for me, but that doesn’t make what other people do stupid or morally wrong.

I think the Caravan should be the go-to for families. I’ve driven a rental one long distance and it’s not exciting or anything, but the space is phenomenal, power is more than adequate and what you get for what you pay is just about right.
When people buy crossovers or much more expensive Odysseys/Siennas because they have kids, fine, but by far the most practical and cost-effective solution is the Caravan. I find that with the alternatives you’re paying a lot for a different image (although quality does play a factor, depending on what you’re comparing this to).
Fits are also very capable cars, I think they’re great, too.

The new Honda Civic Touring. $27k gets you a turbo motor that runs on regular gas and gets 31/42 mpg, plus every (within reason) luxury feature and active safety gizmo you can think of.

Honda Accord. You can get a stick shift Sport model for around $25k, which is a steal. Less than the average new car on price but definitely not on substance.

Most by me (2016) have “J” VINs, so they are made in Japan.

Agreed. The Caravan, specifically the AVP, is a value steal. For some not needing that much car, that’s where the Fit, well, fits.

I don’t think the Si is a good pick anymore...With every generation it got weight added, redline dropped, and more wash-out feeling.
What happened to 200 hp 1.8 l screamers that were under 2600 lbs.
Now all you get is a 3000 lb pig with a 2.4 liter undersquare engine making 200 hp at economy car levels of revs.
IDK man, maybe it’s just me but thanks to modern constrictions, turbos have become the only way to go. Good-bye screaming NAs, but at least we get to keep the power...even if it is delivered differently and not as thrillingly as shifting at over 8,000 rpm. Now if only we can get the lightweight back.

Ok, where is your iPhone made?
Looking at 2016 in Ontario there are 11 at Penske, 10 of which are Japanese made, and one is Mexican. I feel like their factories would have a floor of acceptability to the product. I have some very nice things (a bike for example) that was produced in China.
Maybe you want to come to the future of the global economy?

I still think there’s variation, but I am seeing Chinese-made ones coming up more often, and they only come up with the newer ones. I think it was either 2014 or 2015 where the Chinese ones started selling in Canada.

No way. It is NA. Just an unimpressive NA because it isn’t even making power through revs, just stroke and torque.

I feel like just about everything in the Mercedes lineup is priced pretty fairly. Same goes for almost everything from Lexus. Almost.

I mean, I only really think it’s a good deal because of the price point. I can’t even find a Focus ST in my area, but when they have popped up it’s been above 25k. Same for GTI’s

I mean I’d buy a 500 Abarth used because they depreciate like a brick, Fiesta ST’s are actually cheaper by me than Si’s but I’m a biased little kid (see kinja name), and Oppo has told me otherwise against anything Veloster

Rented one last summer for a family trip. I was surprised with how great it was. Interior felt nice and was ridiculously comfortable and spacious. Rented a Sienna a couple of weeks later - there were a few smarter design elements, but as far as driving dynamics it was still a huge minivan and dollar for dollar it would make no sense to buy that over the caravan I think. Of course I know nothing about reliability for either but I would imagine long term maintenance costs would come out about the same?

Subaru Crosstrek.
Base is around $23K and the next option level up is $24K and decently equipped. For that you get AWD, a proper manual, and something that can haul some stuff and deal with some light off-roading/bad conditions.

About the Veloster...okay im not going to change your mind if it was made up by the kind of people who hates all things Hyundai just because Hyundai. I test drove it and it was amaziiiing.

I would think long terms costs would be in favour of the Caravan. Not sure what depreciation is like on Odysseys or Siennas but I’d imagine you’re going to take a greater hit on these even if depreciation percentages are lower than the Caravan just because of the much higher cost of entry for them.
That said, our family did own a Toyota minivan a long time ago - the Previa. It was slow, but there was so much space in there and our family had that car for nearly 10 years, and at that point it was only starting to get body rust. I think the only issue ever with that one was it developed a hole in the muffler, so it sounded a lot meaner than a Previa should, but that thing just kept going. So there is something to be said about Toyota quality but I'm not sure if it's worth that $10k gap in starting prices.

Not the Toyota Tacoma. Used, RWD PreRunner models with the V6 and over 100K miles are around $20,000. For a compact truck with barely any significant options. No thanks.

Golly. That honesty.
You’re right. All these articles/websites/businesses about managing your budget wouldn’t exist, if you didn’t buy things you didn’t have money for.
